Original Superfoods Valerian Extract Powder 150 grams

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), cat's valerian, is a perennial plant, native to Europe and parts of Asia. It grows in meadows and woodlands within moist, temperate climates and has since been naturalized in North America. The plant grows up to two meters high and produces small clusters of white or pink flowers. The flowers have a sweet, pleasant scent, in distinct contrast to the medicinal roots of the plant. The root system consists of a vertical rhizome and an abundance of smaller rootlets which are harvested and dried at temperatures less than 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Cats are highly attracted to the scent of valerian in the same way that they are attracted to catnip, having a tendency to bite the root and rub against it. Hence its other name, cat valerian! The odor is also attractive to rats, legend says that the Pied Piper of Hamelin used valerian to lure the rats.

Active ingredients

  • Valerian acid
  • 0.5 to 1.5% essential oil, consisting among others of monoterpene hydrocarbons and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons
  • 0.1% alkaloids: more than 10 different alkaloids were detected, eg valerianine, valerine, chatinine and others.
  • Enzymes
  • Choline
Valerian root is most commonly used by those who need a little aid to sleep. It is frequently combined with hops, lemon balm, or other herbs that also cause drowsiness. There is some scientific evidence that valerian works for sleep disorders, although not all studies are positive. When prepared as a tea, it is slightly sweet and spicy with a touch of bitterness, making it palatable to some, but not all individuals.
